Playwriting workshop

Once a week, in a safe and supportive haven, a group of experienced and novice playwrights will gather to read and critique their new plays. They will learn the art of providing effective feedback and the importance of revision. In addition, writers will hone their writing and creative skills with exercises and prompts when time permits during the sessions.

Beginning July 31, 2024, every Wed for six consecutive weeks

Criteria

To join the Workshop a candidate must have written at least one of the following:

·      A complete short or full-length play

·      A rough first draft of a short or full-length play

·      A work-in-progress of at least 20 pages for a full-length play or 10 pages of a short play

Each week 2-3 writers will bring copies of 10-20 pages of their play and distribute pages to the readers. Readers will read aloud the pages followed by constructive feedback from the group. 

Public reading

At the end of the workshop, Stanza will host a public reading of writers' work in our cozy Beacon bookstore, a great opportunity to hear the work with an audience, and celebrate the achievement.

Steven Fechter is a playwright and screenwriter. He cowrote the screenplay for the film The Woodsman (based on his play). The Woodsman play and his other theatrical works have been staged throughout North America and Europe. He taught theatre and film at John Jay College of Criminal Justice and screenwriting at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York.
